NJCU Study in India Program - Sept. 19 deadline

The University is pleased to announce that NJCU’s Study India Program (SIP) is accepting

student applications for a 12-day travel program held in India from January 3^rd to 15^th , 2012.

Ten (10) NJCU students will be selected to visit Mumbai and participate in a cultural enrichment

program organized by our partner school, the HR College of Commerce and Economics

(HRCCE). The trip will include travel to Delhi to visit the Taj Mahal and other famous sites.

Scheduled activities in Mumbai include an Indian dance workshop, a site to a rural village electrification

project, a Bollywood film workshop, presentations on historic and contemporary India, and sightseeing

and shopping.

Program costs will be significantly subsidized by the NJCU Foundation. The cost to students for

this unique experience will be $1000, which includes airfare, hotel accommodations, and

meals. Students should also have at least an additional $200 for personal expenses.

The application process is competitive and students must meet eligibility requirements. The

Cinque Lee, brother of Spike Lee, came to the Media Arts Department and screened excerpts of several of his films including NOWHERE FAST. Besides having directed several films, Cinque is also known for his acting roles in Jim Jarmusch's film MYSTERY TRAIN and COFFEE AND CIGARETTES as well as co-writer with sister Joie of CROOKLYN. He was extremely generous with our students and really liked coming to the department.

| 2011 Film & Video Production Workshop

The TWN Film & Video Production Workshop is a unique "hands- on" program that provides practical skills and resources for emerging film and video makers.

The Production Workshop emphasizes on the training and support of people of color who have limited resources and access to mainstream educational institutions and traditional training programs within the film/video industry. Most past workshop participants now work in film, video and the media arts and include Academy Award nominees and Emmy winning filmmakers. Instructors and guest speakers are working media professionals.

The curriculum of this intensive 6 month program focuses on the pre-production, production and post production skills necessary to take a short project from conception to completion. Workshop members will participate in projects shot on 16mm film and digital video. Workshop members will gain technical skills and experience through the projects, and will be trained to edit using the non-linear Final Cut Pro system.

The Production Workshop begins in early April and meets every Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the offices of TWN. The workshop is time intensive and participants must be able to attend regular class meetings as well as meet the out-of-class demands of pre- production, production, and post-production. Prior film, video or related experience is recommended but not required; creativity, self-initiative, time and a collaborative spirit are. The selection to the Production Workshop is limited to 9 participants. An initial written application is required and a second round of applicants are selected for interviews. The cost of the 2011 workshop will be $600.

The deadline for applications is Monday, March 14th, 2011.

INTERNSHIPS AT ASIAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL

Come join the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) Team! The AAIFF is the first and longest running film festival of its kind in the U.S. that honors works by and about Asian and Asian Americans. We are now hiring for spring and summer internships. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely in producing the Festival through various positions. All internships are equivalent to entry-level job positions, and require persons with initiative, dedication, and the ability to think outside the box. Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to staying on for the Festival. The AAIFF'11 is scheduled for July 13 to July 23, 2011 in New York City.

Design/Web Assistant (ASAP or January to August)
Help manage and regularly update the ACV and Festival sites. Work closely with Festival staff on various levels of production. Big plusses: experience in interactive, graphic, or web design and knowledge in HTML.

Outreach Coordinator (ASAP to August)
Responsible for maintaining and establishing relationships with various community organizations, universities, schools, and clubs for special/promotional events.

Program & Prints Coordinator (ASAP to August)
Facilitate the process of all film-related programming, including tracking submissions and prints. Serve as liaison for accredited filmmakers, industry, and guests of the film festival.

Production Assistant (ASAP to August)
Help execute production of Festival programs and special events. Coordinate logistics with sites, vendors, and sponsors. Assist with day-to-day office operations.

Hospitality Coordinator (April to August)
Responsible for the accreditation of all filmmakers, industry and guests of film festival. Arrange all hotel and flight accommodations for filmmakers/guests as deemed necessary. Edit and update the filmmaker/industry packet.

Marketing Assistant (April to August)
Assist with public relations and promotional works for the AAIFF. A background in film is not necessary, but excellent writing skill is a must.

Tech Production Assistant (April to August)
Assist with tech support ranging from DVD burning, editing, to digitizing. Experience in Final Cut Pro and/or Photoshop a BIG plus but will train on job.

Special Events Coordinator (April to August)
Research, plan and organize festival fundraiser and after parties.

ACV Archival Intern (ASAP)
Help digitize and organize ACV's original Asian American print collection. No experience necessary. Will train on job.

Qualifications:
·Students with a genuine interest in the arts, humanities, and/or film.
·Detail-oriented with a keen sense of organization.
·Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
·Familiarity with Mac platforms and Microsoft Office suite.
·Able to commit 15-20 hours a week.
·BIG plusses: Knowledge of film/video formats and handling; fluency in Asian languages; familiarity with FileMaker Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, and proficiency in HTML/CSS/PHP.

Association (EWA), I would like to offer your students the opportunity to
take a leadership role in a cutting-edge video production company focused on
exciting environmental issues in New Jersey and the metropolitan area.
Internship positions for the fall semester are available to capable students
studying film, cinematography, communications, graphic design, journalism,
broadcast journalism, marketing and any related major.

EWA has served as an action-based environmental leader since 1989. Since
2008, EWA has run the only daily nature and wildlife blog in New Jersey,
www.WildNewJersey.tv, and the state's only daily environmental news blog,
http://NewGreenMedia.tv, which together reach over 75,000 viewers. In
addition, EWA's video production department has produced dozens of video
features that have aired on cable networks, blogs, social media outlets, and
conferences before thousands of viewers including elected officials such as
Governors, Senators, and Congressmen.

We are seeking qualified students to help develop our multimedia program,
including filming, producing, and editing videos and podcasts, and expanding
our online presence and social media networks. Internships range from 8 to
30 hours per week, and include a stipend. The stipend amount is based on
relevant experience, availability and talent. Applicants should be

within a dynamic team.

The Reach Film Fellowship (RFF) is a specialized program for early-career filmmakers who are making artful, socially relevant short films between 5 and 15 minutes long. Four filmmakers per year are selected to receive a $5,000 grant, production support, and seven months of mentorship, career advising and industry exposure as they progress through the entire production and post-production process and prepare for submissions to festivals and distributors. The Reach Film Fellowship seeks applicants who are emerging, early-career filmmakers and have completed at least one short film. Recent film school graduates and self-taught filmmakers with the equivalent experience are excellent candidates. Current students can apply as long as they will have graduated by summer 2010.

Next Wednesday - FEATURE LENGTH SCRIPT READING of INFINITE THREAD by Loredana Gasparotto plus short excerpt from NJCU script class. 7PM FRIES 223. free and open to the public.

One of the major components of preparation of a narrative work to go into production is the link of writing drafts of the work, then public reading by actors and actresses of the text (which usually sends the project back into another more finalized re-write). In the past, we've done public script readings in the department but this is the first in several years.

For all media arts majors interested in writing and production, this should be an event not to be missed as it truly is an interesting learning experience. Many times in New York City, there are public script readings at such places as La Mama's and off broadway theater spaces which sometimes attract high profile actors and actresses to read (they often are looking for more interesting work).

INFINITE THREAD is the first feature length narrative developed by Loredana Gasparotto whose shorts TAINTED and HAMARTIA recently screened at Anthology Film Archives as part of the New Filmmakers Series. TAINTED was awarded the Director's Citation prize in the 2010 Black Maria Film and Video Festival.

IFP PROGRAMMING DEPARTMENT INTERN.

We need a Sharp and self-directed individual. The ideal candidate should be flexible, professional, motivated and with great interest in and knowledge of independent narrative and documentary film. Expertise in Microsoft platform, Excel, Word and internet savvy a must; any database software (Access, Raiser’s Edge), a plus. This is a great position for someone interested in the inner workings of film programming, arts administration and in working for a filmmaker’s advocacy group.

Our intern would assist with Narrative & Documentary Independent Filmmaker Labs (Spring 2010, labs.ifp.org), Fiscal Sponsorship program, alumni tracking, research on outside film funding organizations & grants, lots more! This is an administrative and programming support position, including research and data entry.

The Flaherty is currently offering three Fellowships which provide economic support to applicants interested in attending the Seminar: Professional Development, Student, and just announced - LEF New England Fellowships (deadline for LEF applicants is March 15). All fellowships are highly competitive. Preference will be given to first-time Seminar attendees. If you have previously received a Flaherty Fellowship, you are not eligible to apply. A screening of recent works from the Palestinian filmmaker based in Cologne, Germany including The Roof, a quiet, personal testament to the history and daily oppression of Palestinians living in Israel, and Balconies, an experimental meditation focusing on the deteriorating and unfinished balconies of Ramleh, reminders of the potential that a neighborhood now scarred by war and conflict once had. Aljafari was a featured artist at the 2009 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar and is currently a Radcliffe-Harvard Film Study Center Fellow.

*The Roof (2006, 61min, Palestine) "An eloquent and understated exploration of physical and psychic place in the context of Palestinian filmmaker Aljafari's family history. Returning to his parents' and grandmother's homes in Ramleh and Jaffa, now part of Israel, Aljafari uses elegant cinematography, unhurried rhythms, and fragmented narrative to convey how space, time, and history have been molded by politics and Israeli institutionalized neglect. The roof of the title is an absent one, on the unfinished house where his family has lived since their resettlement in 1948, and it functions as a place of waiting marked by constant deferral.-- Irina Leimbacher. This film screened at the 2009 Flaherty Seminar.

Work consumes our daily lives - as a means of survival, a badge of identity, and a lifelong source of joy or sorrow. Bringing together a wide range of films and videos, WORK, the 2010 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, will examine the ways in which artists depict and explore the daily rituals and larger implications of work as well as the changing nature of work and the workplace. The Seminar will provide a panoramic survey of work in its many facets - from the history of labor strife to the rise of global capitalism to the abandoned working class of post-industrial societies in America and China.

Dennis Lim - 2010 Flaherty Seminar Programmer
Dennis Lim is a New York based critic and editor. He is the founding editor of Moving Image Source, the online publication and research resource of the Museum of the Moving Image. He writes regularly for The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and was a film critic at The Village Voice from 1998 to 2006, as well as its film editor from 2000 to 2006. He is also the editor of The Village Voice Film Guide (Wiley, 2006). A member of the National Society of Film Critics, he has programmed film series at BAMcinematek in New York and served on juries at film festivals internationally, including the San Sebastian, Vancouver, Tribeca, Seoul Digital, and South by Southwest Film Festivals. He teaches in the Cultural Reporting and Criticism graduate program at New York University and is currently a member of the New York Film Festival selection committee.

hey all,

the flaherty seminar is a week long boot camp of screenings, discussions, more screenings, then dancing and drinking...all like at a glorious getaway retreat style setting. i've gone three times and we've had a few students do the student fellowship with success and loads of experiences. best thing is that they try and get all the filmmakers who are screening to attend so you can hear things straight out of the mouths of the makers (last time i was there, i had lunch with kenneth anger). info. below...deadline fast approaching.

ABOUT THE FLAHERTY SEMINAR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM:
Each year the Flaherty offers fellowships to students and emerging and mid-career filmmakers and film professionals who would be unable to attend the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar without financial support. The fellowship program is designed to promote diversity within the participant pool, which is essential in providing the unique critical experience of the Seminar. Besides interacting with the group at large, Flaherty fellows take part in private meetings and discussions with the featured artists and other special guests in attendance, including programmers, writers, and academics. Fellows arrive on campus a day before the Seminar begins to learn about the history of the Seminar, discuss pre-assigned readings relating to the theme, and watch and discuss each other's films, by way of an informal Fellows film screening. Fellows will be able to return home with creative inspiration, experiences and connections, which will aid them in furthering their own careers and artistic endeavors.

Next Wed. Feb 24 from 10:00 am TO 12:00 pm, LibertyHealth Employees will be dressed in red and need to be filmed dancing in their respective departments throughout Jersey City Medical Center including the EMS.
At 12:00 pm we need a 2 minute filming of a large group of employees gathered in the lobby by the chapel, shooting from the second floor balcony. Board members and local political leaders will be invited to join this group shot.
The purpose of this video is to display Jersey City Medical Center's support of Women's Heart Health and we would like to show it on Channel 1 and also release it on new age media including You Tube and our FaceBook Site within 24 hours with of course some minor editing and subtitles added.
From 6:30 to 7:30 pm that evening, we are holding a Women's Heart Health Panel for the community. We would also like to show this on Channel 1 for those who are elderly, homebound, handicapped, etc. as you suggested previously.

The national tour of the 29th annual Thomas Edison Black Maria International Film and Video Festival, New Jersey’s only Academy Award-qualifying festival for documentary shorts, will premiere at its home base, New Jersey City University, on Friday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Margaret Williams Theatre of Hepburn Hall, 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. Admission is free.

The 29th Festival features 70 award-winning works. Many of the filmmakers will attend the opening.

Among the award-winning filmmakers who will be present at the premier will be Glen Rock resident Jane Steuerwald, an NJCU professor of media arts, and video artist Henry Baker of Washington, D.C., whose 10-minute film, “Terrorist Activity Radio Hour,” will be screened on opening night.

In response to the rise of terrorism around the world, Professor Steuerwald and Mr. Baker revisit a live radio performance piece they first created in 1981 on WAER-FM. An intense sound/image collage, “Terrorist Activity Radio Hour” combines live call-ins, music, interviews, and dramatic readings with multilayered images and sound effects and unites the political, the philosophical, and the satirical.

Dennis Conors’ “Breaking Boundaries: The Art of Alex Masket,” a film that contains a soundtrack with music performed by the Diane Moser Quintet, which includes Andy Eulau, an NJCU adjunct professor of music, will also be screened at the opening.

Among other Festival works that will be screened at the NJCU premier are “Pickles to Nickels” by Danielle Ash of Brooklyn; “Gordita” by Debby Wolfe with Kaz Kipp, Maureen Morrsion, and Rebecca Ham of Los Angeles; “Missed Aches” by Joanna Priestley, Portland, Oregon; “Banana Bread” by Barton Katonah of New York City; “Sebastian’s Voodoo” by Joaquin Baldwin of Sherman Oaks, California; “The Regular” by Jamie Kirkpatrick of New York City; “Train” by Darius Clark Monroe of Brooklyn; and “Young Continent” by Sarah J. Ideal candidate is a self-motivated intern with some digital video experience, as well as a good knowledge of the independent film world and its players. This is a great position for someone interested in the inner workings of film programming, arts administration and in working for a filmmaker’s advocacy group.

Our intern would assist with Narrative & Documentary Independent Filmmaker Labs (Spring 2010, labs.ifp.org), Fiscal Sponsorship program, alumni tracking, research on outside film funding organizations & grants, lots more! This is an administrative and programming support position, including research and data entry.

TAA is a year round networking and career development forum that supports the work of directors and screenwriters from traditionally under-represented communities within the industry.

Selected directors and screenwriters will have a chance to participate in one-on-one meetings with key industry players in addition to networking and learning from dedicated panels and workshops during the Tribeca Film Festival.

THE GUCCI TRIBECA DOCUMENTARY FUND

The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund is seeking feature-length documentaries that are in the stages of advanced production or post-production with an intended premiere in late 2010 or early 2011. Eligible films should explore broad social issues or movements through engaging stories that may have potential impact and the ability to inspire dialogue. NYC Horror Film Festival

NYCHFF was founded in 2002 by festival director Michael J. Hein in 2002 and over the years the festival has grown into America's largest and most recognized genre film festival focusing solely on Horror, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Thrillers. Each year the NYCHFF celebrates both the horror classics we grew up with and new genre films & filmmakers who created them. The NYCHFF fills the city with special screenings, parties, celebrity guests and free giveaways. The 2009 New York City Horror Film Festival will take place November 18th through the 22nd at the world famous Tribeca Cinemas.

for the women filmmakers - a good friend of mine, esther robinson, got support from this to complete her first feature, 'a walk into the sea: danny williams and the warhol factory' which is a great friggin' film and also won best documentary at the berlin film festival a year or two back. she had good words about this...

Promoting diversity in NYC’s entertainment workforce through mentorship, workshops and job placement. Applications for an eight month fellowship are now open to below-the-line entertainment professionals from communities underrepresented in the industry. Participants will receive ongoing one-on-one guidance from industry mentors, attend a monthly series of guest speakers and workshops, receive a job placement in their specified craft and enjoy networking opportunities provided by complimentary access to all of IFP’s programming. LIVE GAME CAMERA OPERATOR: The successful candidates will operate a professional camcorder on a tri-pod through the course of a live athletic event webcast on the internet. In this position, qualified candidates will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, during both indoor and outdoor events. Dependability and timeliness are a must. Previous experience in camera work and filming or successful completion of comparable NJCU media courses is required.

POST-PRODUCTION VIDEO EDITOR: The successful candidate will edit footage of athletics events on a weekly basis as part of the streaming video packages available at njcugothicknights.com. In this position, qualified candidates will be able to create a highlight video, using production notes supplied by the executive producer of Gothic Vision. Ability to meet deadlines is a must. Previous experience in video editing or successful completion of comparable NJCU media courses is required.

PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER: The successful candidate will serve as the play-by-play announcer for live athletic events webcast on the internet. In this position, qualified candidates must be comfortable speaking clearly on-air and provide descriptive content for the viewers while working alongside a secondary announcer. Strong organizational and oral communications skills are mandatory. Candidate should conduct the necessary research and preparation necessary for a successful broadcast. Previous on-air experience or completion of comparable NJCU media courses is required.

Narratology Showcase Premiere

“Narratology” is a showcase of short films and video works by New Jersey City University students and alumni curated by URBAN IMAGE, a collective of media artists based at the University. It will premiere in the Caroline L. Guarini theater on Friday evening, 6:30PM, December 5th, 2008, at the Jersey City Museum, 350 Montgomery Street in Jersey City. Admission is free and street parking is readily available.

If any of you in our community - students, faculty, alums - are working on documentaries (any form: works-in-progress, short or feature-length, even experimental), please let me know.

The Independent Feature project (IFP) is gearing up for its 2009 Independent Film Week and Market next September. It's a premier venue for the discovery of emerging filmmakers, and it's especially focused on promoting non-fictional works. Many festival and industry folks will be in attendance, seeking new works for their programming.

Although, the deadlines are in May 2009, as a member of their selection committee, I am encouragd to seek out good work and recommend it to the "powers that be."
