TWN Spring Evening Workshops Starts May 3rd, 2011!
TWN presents its seasonal series of walk-in seminars on production topics you need - from production planning and distribution, to new media production, sound recording and more. All classes are $20 ($10 for low income) unless otherwise noted. The workshops take place at Third World Newsreel. Register now by emailing workshop@twn.org.

Roddy Bogawa speaks on using crowdsourcing to fundraise, and all the effort (and "killer rewards") needed to make it work. Having raised raised more than $20G Kickstarter in forty-five days for his new film Taken by Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis he should know! Bogawa's work Some Divine Wind, Junk and I Was Born, But... have screened in dozens of film festivals, gallery and museum venues including Sundance, MoMA and the Whitney Biennial. He is also a professor in media arts at New Jersey City University. ($20/10 low income)

CINQUE LEE
Cinque Lee, brother of Spike Lee, came to the Media Arts Department and screened excerpts of several of his films including NOWHERE FAST. Besides having directed several films, Cinque is also known for his acting roles in Jim Jarmusch's film MYSTERY TRAIN and COFFEE AND CIGARETTES as well as co-writer with sister Joie of CROOKLYN. He was extremely generous with our students and really liked coming to the department.

INTERESTING WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY
| 2011 Film & Video Production Workshop
The TWN Film & Video Production Workshop is a unique "hands- on" program that provides practical skills and resources for emerging film and video makers.
The Production Workshop emphasizes on the training and support of people of color who have limited resources and access to mainstream educational institutions and traditional training programs within the film/video industry. Most past workshop participants now work in film, video and the media arts and include Academy Award nominees and Emmy winning filmmakers. Instructors and guest speakers are working media professionals.
The curriculum of this intensive 6 month program focuses on the pre-production, production and post production skills necessary to take a short project from conception to completion. Workshop members will participate in projects shot on 16mm film and digital video. Workshop members will gain technical skills and experience through the projects, and will be trained to edit using the non-linear Final Cut Pro system.
The Production Workshop begins in early April and meets every Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the offices of TWN. The workshop is time intensive and participants must be able to attend regular class meetings as well as meet the out-of-class demands of pre- production, production, and post-production. Prior film, video or related experience is recommended but not required; creativity, self-initiative, time and a collaborative spirit are. The selection to the Production Workshop is limited to 9 participants. An initial written application is required and a second round of applicants are selected for interviews. The cost of the 2011 workshop will be $600.
The deadline for applications is Monday, March 14th, 2011.

Fellowship Program

The Flaherty is currently offering two types of Fellowships which provide economic support to applicants interested in attending the Seminar:
Professional Development and Student.
We will announce other Special Fellowship opportunities, as they are confirmed. For eligibility requirements, application, and a full list of the fellowships that were offered during 2010, please go to Fellowships.
The Fellowship Program is led by an academic who has attended previous Flaherty Seminars and is designed to further your knowledge of cinema through participation in an array of unique discussions. Fellows will also participate in all general Seminar activities. The program is rigorous and rewarding; it includes selected readings, special meetings with guest artists and other professionals, and smaller discussions with other Fellows. All fellowships are highly competitive.
Professional Development Fellowships:
The Professional Development Fellowship is designed for emerging or mid-career professionals such as filmmakers, programmers, writers, scholars, archivists, and media professionals. Awards are partial grants that cover a portion of the registration fee. Grants are applied directly towards registration for the Seminar.
Student Fellowships:
Student fellowships are open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a degree program (PhD students will be considered in the Professional Development category). All majors are welcome; we select a diverse array of students from throughout the U.S., as well as internationally. We look for students who have the capacity to interact in both small and large groups, and be willing to share their passion for film. Awards are partial grants that cover a portion of the registration fee. Grants are applied directly towards registration for the Seminar.

INTERNSHIPS AT ASIAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL
Come join the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) Team! The AAIFF is the first and longest running film festival of its kind in the U.S. that honors works by and about Asian and Asian Americans. We are now hiring for spring and summer internships. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely in producing the Festival through various positions. All internships are equivalent to entry-level job positions, and require persons with initiative, dedication, and the ability to think outside the box. Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to staying on for the Festival. The AAIFF'11 is scheduled for July 13 to July 23, 2011 in New York City.
Design/Web Assistant (ASAP or January to August)
Help manage and regularly update the ACV and Festival sites. Work closely with Festival staff on various levels of production. Big plusses: experience in interactive, graphic, or web design and knowledge in HTML.
Outreach Coordinator (ASAP to August)
Responsible for maintaining and establishing relationships with various community organizations, universities, schools, and clubs for special/promotional events.
Program & Prints Coordinator (ASAP to August)
Facilitate the process of all film-related programming, including tracking submissions and prints. Serve as liaison for accredited filmmakers, industry, and guests of the film festival.
Production Assistant (ASAP to August)
Help execute production of Festival programs and special events. Coordinate logistics with sites, vendors, and sponsors. Assist with day-to-day office operations.
Hospitality Coordinator (April to August)
Responsible for the accreditation of all filmmakers, industry and guests of film festival. Arrange all hotel and flight accommodations for filmmakers/guests as deemed necessary. Edit and update the filmmaker/industry packet.
Marketing Assistant (April to August)
Assist with public relations and promotional works for the AAIFF. A background in film is not necessary, but excellent writing skill is a must.
Tech Production Assistant (April to August)
Assist with tech support ranging from DVD burning, editing, to digitizing. Experience in Final Cut Pro and/or Photoshop a BIG plus but will train on job.
Special Events Coordinator (April to August)
Research, plan and organize festival fundraiser and after parties.
ACV Archival Intern (ASAP)
Help digitize and organize ACV's original Asian American print collection. No experience necessary. Will train on job.
Qualifications:
·Students with a genuine interest in the arts, humanities, and/or film.
·Detail-oriented with a keen sense of organization.
·Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
·Familiarity with Mac platforms and Microsoft Office suite.
·Able to commit 15-20 hours a week.
·BIG plusses: Knowledge of film/video formats and handling; fluency in Asian languages; familiarity with FileMaker Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, and proficiency in HTML/CSS/PHP.
Internships are unpaid but come with travel reimbursement (up to $4.50 a day) and university credit (if applicable).
