Heads Up on MAD folks working on Docs

If any of you in our community - students, faculty, alums - are working on documentaries (any form: works-in-progress, short or feature-length, even experimental), please let me know.

The Independent Feature project (IFP) is gearing up for its 2009 Independent Film Week and Market next September. It's a premier venue for the discovery of emerging filmmakers, and it's especially focused on promoting non-fictional works. Many festival and industry folks will be in attendance, seeking new works for their programming.

Although, the deadlines are in May 2009, as a member of their selection committee, I am encouragd to seek out good work and recommend it to the "powers that be."

"Hallelujah" screening on NJCU campus

On Wednesday, October 29 at 6:30pm the classic 1929 film "Hallelluhah" by King Vidor will be screened in the Margaret Williams Theater.

Made at the dawn of the Hollywood's sound era, "Hallelujah" is a milestone musical which tells the hardscrabble story of a southern sharecropper turned evangelist whose life goes awry. King Vidor was nominated for a Best Director Academy Award for "Hallelujah," his first sound film.

Noted film critic Donald Bogle will be the guest speaker in a program co-presented by NJCU, the Department of Media Arts, the Black Maria Film Festival, and Newark Black Film Festival.

2008 Flaherty Seminar Internships
The Flaherty is currently in search of 2008 Flaherty Seminar Interns. The internships will involve planning for the 54th Annual Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, The Age of Migration. The internship duties include: helping with Seminar registration, fellowships, and travel logistics; assisting with outreach and advertisements; organization of artists' press materials; and general office duties. Applicants should have an interest in documentary/experimental film, strong organizational skills, and knowledge of Dreamweaver and Constant Contact a plus. The time commitment is flexible; but interns will be expected to work between 10-20 hours per week. The internship starts in February and goes through the end of June. The intern must be available to attend the 2008 Seminar from June 18 - June 27, which will be held at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.

What do the Flaherty internships have to offer? An excellent opportunity to learn about arts administration, to gain exposure to curatorial practices, and to attend the 54th Annual Robert Flaherty Film Seminar. This is a non-paid position; however, the cost of the Seminar will be covered for the intern. Also, college credit may be available. 2008 Reel New York Call for Works
Deadline February 15th
Each summer the Reel New York Film Festival presents eight weeks of films by local independent filmmakers. The festival represents the broad ethnic, social and cultural pluralism of New York State and the New York City tri-state area -- and the most cutting-edge creativity in films that reflect the spirit of New York. Works may vary in length, but should not run over 50 minutes. A small acquisition fee will be paid to film and video makers whose works air on "Reel New York".

The University of Oklahoma is seeking a tenure track faculty member, at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level, to teach in the Media area.

Job Responsibilities:

- Teach a variety of courses in filmmaking ranging from theory to practice.
- Advise undergraduate students and mentor graduate students
- Participate in curriculum review and development
- Serve on program, school and university committees
- Manage equipment inventory and upgrades with other faculty in program
- Perform all other related activities as required.

Qualifications:

Education: MFA in film, video, digital arts or related field required.
- Applicant should be a practicing artist with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional creative activity.
- Should have an understanding and knowledge of the practice, theory, and history of experimental film.
- Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate skills in high definition video, lighting, editing, digital animation and related production skills.
- Teaching or demonstrated creative activity in one or more of the following areas desirable: sound, installation art, performance, special effects, animation, or other related digital arts.
- This individual will be working within an interdisciplinary academic program.
- Teaching experience at the college level and mentoring of students is preferred.
